New Growth Ministries Trust is a UK Christian charity founded in 1993 to support the work of New Growth Ministries in Zimbabwe. We do so financially, through prayer and as a sounding board for New Growth Ministries leadership.
History
New Growth Ministries was founded in 1992 by Rob and Hilary Mackenzie, with the aim of looking after the disadvantaged and vulnerable in Zimbabwe. It was recognised from the beginning that they would need support and this led to the foundation of New Growth Ministries Trust, which works with churches, schools and individual supporters to raise awareness of the situation and needs in Zimbabwe.
As the AIDS epidemic devastated Southern Africa, it became clear that caring for children orphaned through HIV was an urgent priority. Initially, the children were looked after by the child’s remaining relatives at Rob and Hilary’s home. However, in time, the need became too great and in 1998 the Lord provided a small derelict farm outside Chinhoyi (110 km from the capital, Harare). The need continued to grow, and in 2004 Keegan Home was built on the farm to care for those children who had no one else to look after them.
The Mackenzies received MBE awards for their work from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2013. Since their retirement, the charity has been chaired by their son Mark and Ben Kasimukire, together with a board comprising others who have either grown up at Keegan House or have been part of the ministry for many years.
What we do
We support New Growth Ministries in looking after vulnerable children in Zimbabwe. Children are taken into care at Keegan Home, a loving Christian environment. There, they are provided with a home, a safe family atmosphere, and education, helping them grow into responsible adults with a hope-filled future.
Keegan Home works in cooperation with the local Social Services department. Over the years, the home has cared for more than 100 boys. Some stay for just a few months, while others remain until they grow up.
The home offers a place of safety for children affected by HIV, those who have been abandoned, and others from traumatic backgrounds. Many of the children have significant medical, physical, or emotional needs. Keegan Home can accommodate up to 24 boys, from babies through to 18 years of age. Girls are cared for by a separate charity.
New Growth Ministries also supports children who achieve the grades needed to go on to university. This has enabled one of the boys to become a doctor, another a chartered accountant, and others to pursue careers as a lawyer and a pharmacist. One has recently started a university degree in Social Work. Others, with NGM’s support, have gained practical skills in trades such as building, farming, and mechanics — essential for helping them provide for their families.
